Inside RED-Connect and media-card-free workflows

For every DIT, camera operator, and post supervisor who has lost sleep over a formatted mag or a two-hour offload alarm, this episode of Workflow Kitchen is for you. Dan Duran, Post Technology Product Manager at RED Digital Cinema, sat down with iodyne’s Martin Christien at NAB 2026 to break down a workflow that removes the media card from the equation entirely: three RED cameras, tethered straight to iodyne Pro Data, recording true RAW files with nothing in between.

Fewer Steps, Fewer Points of Failure
Dan’s core philosophy on workflow design is simple: every extra step is a place things can go wrong. Skipping the media card means skipping the checksum, skipping the “did that copy finish,” and skipping the risk of a card getting reformatted with footage still on it.

The True Source File, Not a Proxy
This isn’t a compressed signal or an SDI capture. It’s the native RAW file, instantly encrypted, and written directly to RAID-6-protected iodyne Pro Data storage. Editors and colorists can start work immediately, and get the same flexibility they’d have from the original media.

Sustained Data Rate vs. the “Efficiency Tax”
Consistent write speed matters more than raw speed. A predictable data ceiling means you can calculate exactly how many camera feeds, at what resolution, your setup can sustain. An inconsistent rate, by contrast becomes “the efficiency tax.”  The slowdowns and workarounds eat into a production’s budget.

A Small Footprint
The whole rig runs on gear most productions already own or could buy off the shelf. No specialized heavy iron, or no dedicated engineer is required to run it.
